Growing wild garlic

Oblique bow - flower head
Oblique bow - flower head

Perennial green onions are quite widespread in garden and summer cottages. And this is no coincidence, because they provide vitamin greens from melting snow to new snow. It is difficult to imagine a plot without a batun bow. You can often find chives, slime onions, multi-tiered bows there. But you will not see an oblique onion in every garden.

This is not surprising. In nature, it grows in hard-to-reach places: on the slopes of the mountains of Southern Siberia - Sayan, Kuznetsk Alatau and Altai, as well as the Urals. In culture, it began to be grown quite recently, unlike other onions, the history of cultivation of which goes back more than one century.

It is also called vinegar, ukun, mountain garlic. Sometimes it is mistakenly passed off as a hybrid of onion and garlic called garlic, forgetting that garlic does not propagate by seeds at all, which means that there can be no hybrids in principle.

You can understand those who are mistaken - the green parts of these plants are very similar. The leaves of the slanting onion are broadly linear (up to 4 cm wide), tapering to the top, up to 40 cm long. They alternately depart from the stem obliquely (hence the specific name) to the sides. Everything is like garlic. Here are just a stem about 80 cm high is crowned with an inflorescence - a multi-colored spherical umbrella of yellow fragrant flowers. And at the bottom of the stem, not a head with teeth is formed, but the so-called false bulb (like all perennial onions) - a thickening with a diameter of 2 cm and a height of 4 cm, dressed on the outside in leathery brown scales.

In this type of onion, both the leaves and the entire plant are used as food, along with the bulb. Oblique onions surpass all other perennial onions in the content of ascorbic acid and dry matter in the leaves. In addition, its plants and bulbs contain carbohydrates, vitamins, proteins, essential oils, carotene, phytoncides and other useful substances. The slanting onion is similar in composition to the Siberian wild garlic. And the taste of these two plants is similar - slightly chalky, specific. Therefore, in Siberia, oblique onions are also called garden wild garlic. Gardening is called because this onion has taken root well in the garden plots of Siberians.

Agrotechnical methods of cultivation of slanting onions are based on its biological characteristics. A well-lit area with fertile, loose, moisture-retaining soil is allocated for planting. Oblique onions are bred mainly with seeds. They are sown before winter or early spring. The aisles are left at least 40 cm wide, since its plants are large and demanding on light. The crops can be covered with plastic wrap so that the soil warms up faster and moisture remains in it.

With the appearance of friendly shoots (after 7-10 days), the film should be removed. By the fall of the first year, the plants reach a height of 20 cm and have 3-5 leaves, and the next year they reach their maximum size and begin to bear fruit.

Usually plantings are mulched with a thin (3-5 cm) layer of sawdust, peat, needles. The feeding regime is the same as for most perennial onions: in early spring - nitrogen-mineral (to intensify the regrowth of leaves), at the end of August - mineral (to regrow new roots, lay daughter bulbs and prepare plants for winter).

Oblique onion is a frost-resistant plant; it endures the most severe winters without shelter.

In spring, the scythe grows early - soon after the snow melts. Already in May it can be eaten. Use it by picking off individual leaves or pulling out the entire plant as a whole. It is not customary to cut the onion obliquely, since it does not grow again this season, and the plants can leave weakened in the winter.

Oblique onions are eaten fresh in salads, put in sauces for meat dishes, and added when salting vegetables as a spice. It can be prepared for future use: freeze, dry, pickle or pickle.

Oblique onions are not only tasty and healthy, but also beautiful. In addition, it is an excellent honey plant. Bees, attracted by him to the garden, simultaneously pollinate other crops, significantly increasing their yield.

Planting this onion can be easily and simply renewed by sowing seeds. The yield of seeds in slanting onions is always good. The seeds ripen early (early August) and always ripen well. Their germination capacity lasts up to three years.
