It is able to grow in the worst soils, in damp shaded areas. The name comes from the German Schnittlauch, which literally means "cut onion" (hence the Russian name chives).

Since ancient times, chives have been known to the Romans and Europeans, but they began to cultivate it only in the Middle Ages. Today it is quite popular in Europe. Less pungent than regular green, chives serve not only as an excellent seasoning, but also, thanks to their bright color, also decorate dishes. During the flowering period, in early June, it is also a decoration of the garden: its inflorescences are purple-blue fluffy balls, like stars are scattered over the garden.

In mid-April or early May, the slug onion begins to grow. When plucking or cutting off its succulent leaves, a lot of mucus is released, which was the name of this onion. Its leaves do not coarse until late autumn, so they are suitable for fresh food from spring to autumn. Moreover, young leaves are formed not only in spring, as in many onions, but during the entire growing season. They have a more delicate taste, almost without bitterness, are distinguished by a high content of iron salts, therefore, they are especially useful for people suffering from anemia.

Perhaps the most common type of onion is onion. Its leaves and bulbs are used for food. The onion bulb is an enlarged bud. It consists of a bottom (stem), primordia, fleshy scales and a shirt - dry dense outer scales. The upper fleshy scales gradually die off and dry out: the plant transfers nutrients from them into the bulb and spends it on the development of young bud buds.

The upper scales, using up the reserves of nutrients, become thinner and turn, finally, into dry scales. The more of these scales on the bulb, the better the bulbs are preserved during winter storage. In our northern climate, it is not possible to obtain sufficiently large and decaying bulbs, therefore the cultivation of onions for bulbs is not cultivated in our country. But you can get excellent greens by planting seedlings on the beds in the spring - small onions grown from seeds.

On our beds, shallots are not very popular, and yet, unlike onions, they can give a good harvest of bulbs. From one bulb, planted in spring, a whole nest of 10-30 (up to 40) medium-sized bulbs with a total weight of up to 0.5 kg grows by autumn, which can be stored for a long time in a room.

In terms of chemical composition, shallots are similar to onions, but richer in sugars and ascorbic acid. In addition, shallots contain more phytoncides than onions, which provide the medicinal properties of onions. Shallots are also grown for the sake of green leaves, which can be plucked within a month after planting and which, unlike the feathers of perennial onions, do not coarse during the growing season.

What is so wonderful about onions as a culture? It is very healthy. Onion bulbs and leaves contain special substances - phytoncides, which have the property of killing pathogenic microbes. During the Great Patriotic War, frontline doctors used onion phytoncides to treat purulent wounds that did not heal for a long time. They treated wounds with pairs of freshly grated onions for 8-10 minutes.

After the first treatment, the number of microbes decreased by 4-5 times, and after two or three treatments, the microbes disappeared completely, and wound healing was accelerated several times. It is now known that onion phytoncides not only kill pathogenic microbes, but also improve the growth and development of human tissues, and contribute to their restoration. In addition, onion improves digestion, as it stimulates the secretion of the glands of the gastrointestinal tract, is an excellent prophylactic against flu, runny nose, and helps with coughs. Onions are especially rich in vitamin C.

The daily requirement for this vitamin can be quickly satisfied with 80-100 grams of green onions per day. The ability of onion to lower blood sugar levels, and onion juice to dissolve sand and even stones has been established. For a long time, folk cosmetics have used onions as a means of promoting hair growth and strengthening, protecting the skin from wrinkles.
