Early sowing - early harvest
Every year I try to get my first vegetables as early as possible in the spring. I start preparing for the season in the fall. I choose a ridge in a high place of the site, which will be well lit all day. After harvesting, a lot of plant residues remain in the garden, and I use them as biofuel in this ridge. I dig a trench there to a depth of 30-40 cm and put the stems of tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, eggplants, carrot tops, beets into it. There are also stems of flowers: phlox, peonies and almost any organic material from the site. You can use the leaves of fruit trees, ornamental trees and shrubs.
It is only necessary to observe one important condition: among the residues placed in the garden, there should be no plants damaged by pests and sick. Do not put plants with roots in the ridge. Some of them are so tenacious that they will easily sprout and clog the garden. This happens with kupena, highlander, phlox, stonecrops and other flower crops. On the plant residues laid in the trench, I pour the earth with a layer of 20 cm, then I add humus or compost there, I add superphosphate. Since autumn, I install it on the ridge of the arc. If the spring is early, then by mid-April here, on the Karelian Isthmus, the snow is already melting. And after a snowy winter, it is necessary in the first half of April to remove the snow from the ridge and cover it with a film. As soon as the soil thaws with a layer of a few centimeters, I sprinkle ash on the ridge, add a little complete mineral fertilizer, loosen it - and you can sow.
I sow vegetables, alternating rows of fast and slow growing vegetables. For example, I alternate parsley with radishes, salad with Chinese cabbage and Chinese cabbage. You can sow leafy celery, watercress, chervil, arugula. I sow dill scattered throughout the garden.
If the vegetables were sown in mid-April, then by mid-May they are already ready for harvesting: radishes, Chinese cabbage, watercress, dill. Slow growing crops - parsley, celery, lettuce remain on the ridge, I weed them, give them additional fertilizing, loosen the soil, and they grow on this ridge all summer. I plant the salad on other beds.
Since autumn, on the same ridge, I plant onion sets very tightly - in a bridge way. I pour 10 cm of earth on top. On a warm ridge, it takes root well and does not shoot. By mid-May, a feather 30-40 cm high grows under the film. I grow garlic here on the greens - I plant the cloves very densely in the fall. In the spring I pull out all the plants completely. I tried to cut greens, but the garlic grows poorly after cutting. I plant a multi-tiered onion here, it grows powerful greens very quickly.
For this method of growing early vegetables, it is important to find the right varieties. I use radishes at different ripening times so that the harvest arrives gradually. It is desirable that the root crop has a small leaf rosette, then it will not shade slowly growing crops. Radish Anabel F1 turned out to be above all praise last season: a very small rosette of vertically arranged leaves and an excellent large root crop were formed.
If greens need to be transported to the city, then from collard greens I prefer Chinese cabbage - it has denser leaves, it tolerates transportation better, does not wrinkle. If you get a big harvest, I use it not only in salad, but also in cabbage soup, you can add it to sorrel cabbage soup to reduce acidity. Here are the varieties of fruitful Chinese cabbage: Lebedushka, Pava, Alyonushka, Susman. After harvesting early vegetables, part of the garden is freed up, and therefore, after fertilizing it, I plant seedlings of leeks, cabbage, beets on this area, and sow carrots. Or, you can sow green crops again: arugula, Chinese cabbage and Chinese cabbage, watercress, dill, lettuce or head lettuce.
I want to draw the attention of novice gardeners to the fact that green crops require a large amount of nutrients. Therefore, before each re-sowing, additional fertilizers must be added: compost, humus or complex fertilizer at the rate.
