How we spent last summer

Harvest

Many readers of the magazine scold the extreme summer of 2010. Complain about crop failures. And the summer was wonderful, you just had to take advantage of this warmth and put in your work.

The plants had enough heat and sunshine, and we did not spare water. They watered the garden abundantly every day, not even watered it, but spilled it. We have a well - you can pour an unlimited amount of water. And although much has been written about the fact that it is impossible to water the garden with cold water (we do not have so many containers to heat water in them), plants reacted well to watering with such water. The most important thing is to properly water the beds.

I often watched how many gardeners water the plantings: one watering can of water for a large garden bed - and believe that the plants will benefit from such watering. However, there is one harm from such watering. With this watering, only the top layer of the soil is wetted, where the weed seeds are located, which, taking advantage of favorable conditions, begin to germinate.

Such watering is unacceptable. To water the beds efficiently, I divided the plot into three zones. Every day, from morning to evening, I spilled one zone. The garden bed (seven meters long) was spilled from a hose for 30 minutes. I checked the quality of watering by touching it with my finger. Plants liked such a strait. The carrots have grown excellent.

The largest carrot shown in the photo was 38 cm long. This is a root vegetable of the carrot variety. The right size. I believe that this type of carrot can only be grown for competition. The carrots are not tasty. The diameter of this root crop is 10.5 cm, of which 2 mm is the edible part, the rest is the core.

I want to note that the grown carrots of this variety did not match the description on the seed bag. It turns out that producers are only fooling summer residents, describing what an excellent variety it is. But other varieties and hybrid of carrots grown last summer: Yaya, Grant, Touchon, Napoli F1 delighted with their taste. From the series Necessary size, we only like tomatoes. They are not only huge, but also delicious.

Hot summer was good for potatoes - there was no late blight

The most productive in the past season were potato varieties: Aurora, Zenit, Charodey, Lugovskoy, Adretta. The early variety Rosara also pleased with the harvest - 15-17 tubers per nest, but I know that this variety is affected by late blight under unfavorable conditions. June last year was cold, and signs of late blight appeared on the tops of Rosara potatoes, but hot July saved the future crop from being affected by the disease. We kept the varieties Aurora and Lugovskoy in the ground not for three months, but a month longer. We planted potatoes on May 15, and dug out at the end of August. The varieties Aurora and Lugovskoy were dug up on 15 September.

Of particular note is the effect of heat on the yield of pumpkin crops. In July, zucchini, squash, pumpkins from the heat and abundance of moisture increased a huge green mass, bloomed, but due to the sterility of the pollen, the fruits were not tied. And there were no pollinating insects to be seen - they were also hot. I had to "work as bees" ourselves. As soon as the heat subsided, then the melon caught up with it. They did not know what to do with the harvest.

Especially noteworthy is the hybrid squash F1 Solar Blast. I plant it for the second year in a row. Indeed, there was an "explosion" in the harvest both in 2009 and in the past. Our melons grew in the sun, so there were no fruits in the heat, and those whose pumpkin crops grew in the shade had a harvest of squash and squash at the beginning of July. Pleased with apple trees this summer. Of course, I watered a lot and often - after three days. Once a week I fed them with liquid manure infusion.

The apples were very large, there were a lot of them, and how fragrant they are! Apple trees are only five years old, and they are already producing a crop for the second year in a row. Juice was driven from currants and plums, as there were too many of them. And the black currant was very fragrant from the abundance of heat and sun last summer. Pleased with the harvest and raspberry, Chinese magnolia vine, actinidia, Japanese quince, garden blueberry.

Flowers also liked the hot summer "extreme". I also did not offend them with abundant watering. Dahlias have grown huge tubers over the summer. And how huge and fragrant the caps of the fragrant phlox were! I want to say that flowers in that season delighted us from early spring to late autumn, replacing each other. Muscari, crocuses, daffodils, tulips bloomed very beautifully.

Only with good care will the plants please with flowering and harvest, and there is no need to scold the extreme summer, you need to help the plants to survive it. You just need to add water, patience and diligence to the heat!
