"I blinded him from what was" - this is how we built the first greenhouses in 1987. For 12 years, the framing wooden structures not only began to collapse, but also overgrown with weed roots, became a breeding ground for a large ant family, and in some places were covered with fungi. The question arose about new greenhouses made of more durable materials.

I was struck by the plot in one of the television programs. It turns out that in England greenhouses and nurseries made of brick or natural stone have been standing for more than one century. Harvests delight gardeners, they can grow curiosities, both vegetable and fruit, and flowers. There are no stones in our area, the brick was only old and very little. Therefore, it was decided to make the base of the greenhouse around the perimeter of concrete, and the sides and the inner framing of brick.

Every time I pick up a seed of this or that plant, I worry: how can this seed, seemingly so defenseless, give a sprout, and then also tasty fruits? In our North-West, in the zone of risky farming, temperature drops are no longer surprising. In April, it may be + 20 ° С and drought (in 2004 we had to actively water the site throughout April), and in May and even in June (on June 19, 2002 there was a frost down to -9 ° С), snow falls or a severe frost will hit. Therefore, we decided to make greenhouses with high ridges and on biofuel.

Having suffered from fungi on the wooden structures of old greenhouses and wounded hands from nails and splinters, we bought plastic greenhouses that are easy to clean with disinfectant solutions, withstand temperatures from -40 ° C to + 80 ° C and are easily cleaned for the winter.

When redeveloping the site, the task was set to make the illusion of a "farm". On the plan, we placed greenhouses along the border with neighbors, where their main area of vital activity is located, so as not to interfere with each other's rest in their areas. We also decided that the structures of greenhouses and the surrounding space should be easily transformable. Therefore:

1. Between the greenhouses and the border with neighbors, we decided to plant low (2 meters in adulthood) bushes of Negus gooseberries, bush cherries, hawthorns (easy to trim without sacrificing decorativeness).

2. The base of the greenhouse made of concrete and masonry makes it easy to transform it simply into neat high ridges, where in cold weather (in April-May or September-October) you can put temporary arches covered with spandbond or plastic wrap.

The desired result: the gooseberries, hawthorns and bush cherries that have grown in a few years will become a spectacular green hedge and will help maintain the illusion of a "farmhouse", even if we do not put frames of greenhouses.

So, all decisions were made, plastic greenhouses were bought, and we began to work on the ground. In the spring we made the markings. To make room, we transplanted a five-year-old apple tree and cleared the area for the first greenhouse to clay. We have blue and white clay on our site, which can be cut with bricks. They did not deepen. Having leveled the surface, the husband put the formwork along the contour under the concrete base of the greenhouse 20 cm high and 14 cm wide under one brick. Two weeks later, the formwork was removed, and I began to make brickwork, and my husband began to mount the plastic frame.

The greenhouse was ready by mid-June. They stuffed it with foliage, half-rotted hay, spilled it with a solution of potassium permanganate, poured 5-8 cm of fertile soil and planted cucumber seeds with a short period from germination to fruiting. The harvest pleased us a little later than usual (at the end of July, and not at the beginning), but a start was made. When harvesting and caring for the plants, I no longer bent over, and when I felt unwell, I sat on the side inside the greenhouse.

In the same summer, we cleared a place for a second greenhouse in order to start construction in the spring. It was in 2002.

Now there are three greenhouses of a single design. Gooseberries, hawthorns and cherries are planted. Tiled paths to the greenhouses, made a flower garden in front of them. Plants feel great. We observe the alternation of crops: in the first year we plant cucumbers on hay and on foliage, in the second year - peppers, eggplants. In the third year, we disinfect the ground, add humus and plant tomatoes. After disinfection, we carry the ground that has served three years under trees and bushes, in flower beds. If necessary, add humus, ash or superphosphate. After harvesting, we weed and dig up greenhouses with a flat cutter. We wash all the plastic parts of the frame with a strong urea solution (it kills fungal diseases).

I would like to tell you a little about how I raise my pets in greenhouses. I consider all plants to be living creatures and try to treat them like myself.

We live in the center of St. Petersburg, the sun in the apartment is only in the summer and then a couple of hours before sunset. I do not highlight seedlings, there is no such possibility. She arrives at the dacha pale, overgrown and seems unhappy. Therefore, when planting, I try to create the most comfortable conditions for the plants: clean, soft, well-fertilized earth with worms; warm water for irrigation and light spandbond (inside the greenhouse).

I plant the tomatoes to a depth of 10-15 cm lying and criss-cross, leaving the top three leaves above the surface. Sometimes it is necessary to bury up to 1 meter of the stem length. In the fall, I am convinced that the entire buried part of the tomatoes is covered with a thick beard of additional roots. With a height of the fertile layer in the greenhouse from 50 to 60 cm, there is enough nutrition for the plants, and there is no need to feed them, but the harvest makes us happy.

When the threat of return frosts disappears, I remove the spunbond from the greenhouses.

Caring for plants comes down to the necessary watering, careful loosening, weeding and garter. As they develop on peppers and eggplants, I remove the stepchildren and all the leaves from the stems to a real fork. For tomatoes - I remove unnecessary stepsons (I form a plant in 2-3 trunks), after tying the first fruit, I remove unnecessary leaves. When the last tomatoes are set, the tomato bush turns out to be all in fruits (from bright red to just set) and completely without leaves. I cover each cut with earth, it seems to me that it does not hurt them very much and there is less loss of juice from wounds.

I open and close hotbeds not at a certain time, but by feeling. If I myself am uncomfortable on the street from the wind, drizzling rain or just not very high temperatures, then I will go into the greenhouse, talk to the plants, look at them, check the moisture of the earth, ventilate a little (5-10 minutes) and do not open them until then until you feel comfortable with the door open. A similar situation happens in the evening. Usually sweltering nights happen in July. We ourselves sleep in the house with open windows and without blankets, but in the morning we want to pull something over ourselves, at least a sheet. I believe the plants experience the same. Therefore, on such days, I leave open the doors of the greenhouses, but I hang them with the thinnest spunbond.

In extreme heat, it happens that I lift the film from all sides, and on the roof (over the film) I throw either an old sheet or a spandbond for light shading.

Watering on such days I give not so much under the roots as over the leaves (and cucumbers, and tomatoes, and peppers with eggplants). The same applies to the flowers on the site. In the literature, I have not met such a technique, it is only spoken about spraying as top dressing. I water abundantly from a watering can. I water on such days up to three times, how many times I take a shower myself during the day, as many times I give showers to pets.

Every morning I greet the plants and see what they don't like, and ask them to wait until evening (except for watering). I loosen my stepson and do other work only after 20 hours.

The greenhouses are very cozy. You can walk in any shoes, even when watering. under your feet is a layer of dry sand from 5 to 10 cm. You can sit with plants on the edge of a greenhouse (it is as tall as a normal stool). Also, sitting, I do almost all the work in greenhouses. Gathering the harvest, I thank the plants for it.

With new greenhouses, without weeds embedded in wooden structures, without fungal diseases and with a great store of accumulated knowledge, I can give my plants more care, attention and understanding.

This is how we live: me and my pets - with new greenhouses. I am sure that we can do better. The main thing is not to rush, but to think over everything so that your dream will come true.

I wish gardeners bountiful harvests!
