"Swing" for seedlings

As you know, there are many crops, high-quality seedlings of which are quite difficult to obtain indoors. This is, first of all, our beloved queen of the garden - cabbage. Also, for example, I have never succeeded in growing seedlings of kochia and asters at home.

There are several reasons for this. First of all, it is a lack of light. Well, where in city apartments with double windows dusty after winter (especially in the so-called "wells") there can be enough light for such light-loving crops!

The next reason is the temperature regime. All of the aforementioned cultures will not develop normally at our 25 degrees apartment, especially with a lack of light. The phrase from the anecdote immediately comes to mind: "Vasya, open the window, Vasya, close the window" …

And another important reason is humidity. The air in city apartments is very dry. Now the so-called vaporizers - air humidifiers have appeared on sale, but I do not have such a device yet, so every day during the seedling period I start with spraying all crops. The main thing here is not to overdo it, especially at first, and even to the "black leg" not far.

In addition to all the above objective reasons, I also have one more, indirect, and, I think, not one of me - a catastrophic lack of space on window sills, seedling racks, hanging shelves … What gardeners do not come up with, but there is still not enough space.

For many years, on long winter evenings, I racked my brains over how to somehow defuse the density of crops on the windowsill, as well as create optimal conditions for growing light-loving crops. I washed the windows in February to make it at least a little lighter, put foil screens to reflect light, placed bowls with cabbage and asters seedlings between the windows - it is lighter and cooler there.

Two years ago I even made a light for seedlings. All the same, she did not achieve the desired result. The light of fluorescent lamps (even a special Osram Fluora) is very different from sunlight. Both asters and cabbage had to be re-sown at the end of April in a heated greenhouse, where the seedlings grew of a completely different quality. But the end of April is pretty late for cabbage. At least June cabbage, having sown seeds at the end of April, in June you are unlikely to eat …

Last winter I once again thought about this question. I read a lot of literature. With some irritation, I saw that early cabbage is not recommended to grow in our region if you do not have a heated greenhouse.

Since I go to the dacha all year round - to feed the birds and get goat's milk for a child, I noticed that already in February the sun begins to warm in a completely spring-like way, and, reflecting from the snow, and generally blind. But the temperature is still low. Unfortunately, I don't have any installations for heating greenhouses, so I decided to do the following. In the last ten days of March, I covered the pepper greenhouse with Svetlitsa film - by the way, I recommend it to everyone, I haven't found anything better for myself - and filled the beds with first-year manure.

A week later I arrived - it smells in the greenhouse in spring! But already from experience I know - do not put manure, and the earth thaws after winter very slowly. Therefore, I did this: I put two strong ropes through the ridge of the greenhouse and tied the ends of each to make a loop. Then, through these two loops, I passed a piece of a regular board. The result is such a "swing" for seedlings (see photo 1).

I made them small that year, because the first time I built something like that. At the same time, I put arcs on one of the ridges of the greenhouse and covered it with spunbond - let the soil warm up.

I chose three crops for sowing - white cabbage (early - a hybrid of Kazachok F1 and a Podarok variety), asters of the Princess variety and kokhia seeds (samosbor). The soil for the seedlings was made by itself: one part - the earth from the home "worm", one part - dung humus and one part - coconut substrate with sand.

Before filling the seedling containers with soil, I thought about watering - I can come to the dacha only once a week. I solved the problem with a regular piece of jersey, tearing it into long narrow strips.

She laid one part of the improvised wick along the bottom of the seedling container, and left the other to hang freely. And so she did with each of the three bowls. Then she filled them with earth almost flush with the edge, so that there was no unnecessary darkening from the edges of the container. I sprinkled aster seeds just a little with coconut substrate, sowed cabbage and kohija deeper.

As soon as I finished sowing, I put all the bowls on a swing, and placed a small bucket of water in the center, into which I lowered the wicks from each seedling container. She wrapped the whole structure with SUF17 spunbond in several layers and went home. A week later I arrived, unwound the spunbonded "cocoon" and could not believe my eyes - the first loops appeared! And this is how the seedlings looked like two weeks after sowing (see photo 2).

I cannot say that the seedlings were friendly, but they were. And they had enough light, water, and heat. But it was still only mid-April! On April 19, in the already more or less warmed earth in a greenhouse, I made the main sowing of cold-resistant crops - seeds of all types of cabbage that I bought for the season - white cabbage of different ripening periods, colored, broccoli, Beijing, kohlrabi and ornamental.

In addition, she sowed asters, radishes, turnips, carrots, beets and lettuce. On April 23, I disassembled the swing, spreading the seedlings from them to the garden bed in the greenhouse next to the main crops. I put the ropes on my skate - they will come in handy next year. In this form, the cabbage seedlings from the swing went to their permanent place of residence (see photo 3). And such a cabbage was in the second decade of June (see photo 4).

At the end of June, we ate the first head of cabbage of the Kazachok F1 hybrid. Thus, my dream came true to eat early cabbage in June. Of course, high-quality seedlings alone are not enough to get full-fledged forks on time. But this is a completely different topic. In conclusion, I would like to show you a photo of a kochia that has grown from a "swing" (see photo 5), and wish you not to be afraid to experiment. I also want to quote my favorite quatrain (alas, I don’t know the authorship), which helped me to look at many things in a completely different way:

In all matters with a maximum of difficulties

The approach to the problem is still the same:

Desire is a multitude of possibilities, And unwillingness is a multitude of reasons …
