It is well known that in ancient times, vegetable gardens and greenhouses were cultivated and actively used at many medical institutions. With their help, both staff and patients replenished their diet with "food from the garden." For various reasons, the subsequent years did not contribute to the development of truck farming and gardening at medical institutions, even in rural areas. It is unlikely that it will be possible to quickly revive such a tradition, but it is probably worth trying, where possible, to use vegetable, berry, and fruit plants not only and not so much for food, but also for decorating the territory and for educational purposes.

So we thought for a long time how to equip the territory adjacent to one of the hospital buildings and annually overgrown with debris, despite all our efforts to eradicate it. True, during the entire summer-autumn season, they diligently "stuffed" the cover lying on the corner of the clearing, which serves as a flowerpot, mowed grass. Last spring, a staff member planted an "extra" pumpkin seedling there. The pumpkin, of course, got a little sick, but then quickly began to grow, by the end of summer, stretching its whips a few meters from the landing site. Since we had no experience in growing pumpkins in "hospital conditions", we took care of it very seriously: we regularly watered it with warm water, fertilized it, and sheltered it from rain and wind. It was decided to leave only one fruit on the stem. Honestly, we didn’t hope to wait "harvest ", since the pumpkin grew in one of the most prominent places, and a large number of people passed by it every day. Given the peculiarities of our patients, which are mainly children deprived of parental care, we thought that they were, some out of curiosity, and some out of mischief will cut off our harvest.”But this, fortunately, did not happen. Moreover, some of the guys looked at the plant with interest, asked the medical staff and educators about it, helped to take care of it.some of the children looked at the plant with interest, asked the medical staff and educators about it, helped to take care of it.some of the children looked at the plant with interest, asked the medical staff and educators about it, helped to take care of it.

Together, they raised a pumpkin, although small, but still pulled 5 kilograms. You can see her in the attached photograph (the head doctor is standing and the author of the article is sitting next to the crop). As a decoration, it lay for some time in the chief doctor's office, then we decided to eat it. We cooked pumpkin porridge privately and everyone who participated in the gardening activities and who wanted to, tried it. Of course, the ecological situation in and around the hospital - and it is located in one of the industrial areas of the city - does not allow the use of grown vegetables, berries and fruits in the diet of children. But the cultivation of zucchini, pumpkins and other "bright" large vegetables allows you to actively use them in teaching and aesthetic education of children, as well as create various compositions that decorate the territory. We are currently hopeful for a good summer to come, which will allow us to make greater use of the area's "hospital design" opportunities. This season, we will not only plant a few pumpkins and zucchini, but also try to grow them to a decent size. The dream of a small greenhouse does not leave us either. Together we decided to "build", naturally outside of working hours, the hills in front of the administrative building. We hope that our common efforts will not be in vain, and our old hospital will "sparkle" with new bright and unexpected colors. The dream of a small greenhouse does not leave us either.
